Focus on ageing gracefully - forty plus
Fab at forty One of the most difficult fashion aspects facing women over 40 is how to dress for the many changes that occur around this age. In our early to mid forties both our bodies and our lifestyles are in transition.
Physiologically our bodies are changing and many of us will suffer from water retention, thinning hair or duller skin. Lifestyle-wise we may be on the brink of empty nest syndrome, we may be newly divorced or beginning new jobs.
If you are a woman over 40, you need to know that you can look just as sexy and vital as your younger counterparts; you just have to learn how to flatter your body without doing a major style overhaul and without looking like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb. So, are your pleated trousers and cuffed sweatshirt bottoms giving your age away? Maybe you’re stuck in an 80’s beauty rut? Has your hairstyle barely changed in the past few years? If so… Change!
The key to dealing with the changes and to modernizing your look is to get in tune with what is in fashion. Handbags and shoes are the quickest way to update your look. Look around - people-watch, browse through magazines, tune into the fashion channel and get a feel for what’s ‘in’. You are not necessarily aiming to be ‘hip and trendy’ but to develop your own timeless signature style. If you need inspiration, look at the ‘mature’ television stars and movie actresses you admire, pick out what you like and emulate their look.
The worst thing you can do is dress years younger than you actually are – this makes you look even older and slightly bizarre. So, even if you have the world’s best legs, please no miniskirts! Avoid baggy, oversized clothes and chose pieces that give you shape. When shopping, don’t think you can wear the same colours you did when you were in your twenties, especially not next to your face. Experiment with various colours in a good light to find what flatters your forty-something skin.
Stand-up or turn-up collars are great for disguising a wrinkly neck. They cover the area and bring focus to the face. It helps too to always wear a bit of white close to your face. Soft pastel-like colours such as pale pink, white or ice blue also bring light to the face and thus detract from the neck.
If you have lost your waistline along the way, wear jackets and pieces that will give you shape.
Take a look at yourself in the mirror, decide what your best features are and emphasize them. If you have nice hands, manicure them and so on.
If age spots begin to appear on the back of your hands or face – fight back. Many products are available that will lighten and fade liver spots and at sites like Skin Lightening Advice you’ll find the best bleaching skin articles, guidance and information.
Unfortunately many forty-something ladies suffer from thinning hair. If this sounds familiar, then explain to your hairdresser what is going on and discuss with her a fresh new style that will help you get the appearance of thicker hair. Ask her advice on products too, there are many on today’s market that are specifically formulated to ‘fatten’ thinning and/or flyaway hair. You can look fab at forty; it just takes a little attention to detail and a few tweaks.

You can easily create a smooth look by wearing a body shaper.Be wary that they wont always be slimming as they may give a slimming look in one area and then produce bulges in areas where there was none previously. So you’ve spent your heard earned wages on buying yourself some absolutely beautiful lingerie. The last thing you would possibly want to happen is for them to become damaged or worn when it comes to doing the lingerie. Are you unsure of what to do when it comes to properly caring for your delicates? Here are some handy pointers of what to do to keep make your fine undergarments last longer when washing them.
Hand washing can be one safe solution to this particular problem. You should do this by filling a small basin, bathtub or your sink with cold water until it is half full. Add a very mild detergent - you should be able to find one that is manufactured specifically for lingerie or delicate items. You should then leave your lingerie to soak in the water.Be sure that you don’t leave them there too long as just 10-60 minutes should be fine.
Once they are soaked, lightly move your garments around the water and gently rub any affected areas with a small bar of soap if required. Once you have done this, rinse the lingerie and very gently squeeze the bulk of the water out however make sure you do not wring them out!
An alternative to hand washing them is of course, machine washing. Washing machines should have a ‘hand wash’ cycle for lingerie. If it does not have an option for a hand wash cycle, or if you are at all unsure, then a delicate cycle for items that are not too delicate. If you don’t want to take the risk then you should stick to hand washing.Items with straps, sequins, hooks or lace should be placed into a special mesh bag.It will only take one wash without a mesh bag for a delicate item to be ruined!
Whichever way you choose to clean your lingerie, in most cases it should be line dried. Some labels will suggest that they can go in the dryer however a dryer can be hard on them over time. When line drying, ensure to put items market ‘lay flat’ onto a mesh drying rack.If however, you do choose to put some heavier items into a dryer - do remember to keep them in that mesh bag!

According to recent market research, the women's plus size market is one of the fastest growing retail industries and it is quite easy to see why.It would appear that women want to shun the unrealistic and - some would say - unhealthy size zero culture. So when the summer months arrive, what is the best way to choose swimwear for real women?
When selecting your plus-sized swimwear there are several ways of disguising problem areas whilst enhancing your best features. For example, draped fabric can conceal bulges and swimsuits with cris-cross design elements can give your waist the appearance of being a bit smaller as well as providing additional body contouring.Larger frames can be made to appear a bit slimmer by choosing swimwear with a deep v-neck.For the lady with a smaller bust and larger hips, this can be balanced with a swimsuit that features a colourful printed top as well as choosing a darker coloured skirt or short for the bottom.
The best time to go out and shop for your swim suit will always be at the beginning of the season. By shopping around May or June, styles will be new and shops will have their shelves well stocked. When shopping round for a new swimsuit you should avoid trying on a bathing suit after you have just eaten a meal or whilst during your menstrual cycle.Colour is a particularly important consideration as black, dark brown and blue can be slimming to the eye. Don’t be taken in with the old myth of the larger woman not being able to wear stripes - women of all sizes can carry of stripes, patterns or bold colours as long as the fit of the swimsuit is flattering to their particular body type.
So the ideal plus-sized swimsuit should flatter the wearer whilst at the same time concealing problem areas and supporting the bosomSo the ideal plus-sized swimsuit should flatter the wearer whilst at the same time concealing any problem areas and supporting the bosom. There's no reason at all why all the skinny women should get all the nicest clothes!

Stuck in a beauty rut?
Has your look not changed in the last five years? Since high school perhaps? Are you still buying the same shades of lipstick, blusher and eye shadow that you have been using for years?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are stuck in a beauty rut. Those who find themselves following the same daily routine when applying makeup and styling their hair should ask themselves – am I fed up with my looks? Am I bored by my beauty routine? Am I a tad out of step with the times?
If the answer to any of these questions is also a resounding ‘yes’ – then it is time for a break. You have to recognise that two major things have changed in the last few years – one is your looks and the other is fashion – to ignore these issues and continue with the same routine, colours and hairstyle day after day, simply doesn’t do you any favours.
For example, your makeup should complement, not fight, your age. So, if you have been wearing a pinkish foundation thinking that it gives you a youthful glow, it is time to switch to one of the newer foundations with more natural-looking yellow undertones.
Get rid of that dark eyebrow pencil – these days, an eyeliner brush dipped in a dry, dark brown eye shadow is a more subtle way to fill in and define brows. It is also high-time for your frosted lipsticks to go into forced retirement. Switch to a shimmery lipstick or a gloss that is sheer enough to let your lips show through. If you don’t know where to start, go through a few magazines and look at the latest trends in make-up. Cut out any pictures that inspire you. Look for images of models that have a similar complexion, hair and eye colour to yours and draw inspiration from what you see.
Next, visit your favourite makeup counter and ask a makeup artist to show you how to enhance your best features. This is a great time to experiment with new colours and formulas that you would not ordinarily try on your own. Do not be afraid to ask the assistant many questions so that you know exactly how to re-create your new, up to date look at home. Updating your make-up means buying colours and finishes outside of your comfort zone. For instance, if you are still using powder-eye shadows, switch to cream shadows - these are softer and do not crease.
You may also need to alter the way you do certain things – for instance, we used to believe that a thin eyebrow arch was best, but nowadays the brow shape is more natural and soft.
Browse magazines for images of hairstyles too. Ask trusted friends and family members for ideas and advice on what they feel would suit you. If you have long hair and are reluctant to cut it shorter, perhaps a funky updo would re-vamp your look without the need for scissors. At sites like Hair Updos you’ll find many hair updos images for both long and shorter hair so that you can begin to experiement with a new look.
Many women, at some time in their life, get into a hair and makeup rut and although they want a new look, they tend to hold on to old-fashioned, comfortable and ‘safe’ ideas.
However, to update your look, you must throw away the old routines and products and open yourself to discovering a new, more modern and beautiful you.
