Not Going Out This Christmas
When I was a kid I used to think I was in a rather fortunate position, my birthday is about a month before Christmas so it was quite fun to start the Christmas preamble with a few presents to be getting on with. Now I’m older and wiser I’m not so confident about that. I detest birthdays nowadays, a card doesn’t remedy the fact that I’m a year older and I saw through Christmas years ago.
Each year some friends will ask me if I’m going ‘home’ for Christmas because my family moved far away years ago. I can’t think of anything worse! Travelling by public transport for four or five hours to spend a couple of days in a remote Norfolk village with nothing to do just to collect some Christmas gifts from my brother and sister which would be nice but unnecessary. Before I left I’d have to engage in the constant siege otherwise known as Christmas shopping, I don’t normally mind going shopping and don’t object at all to getting things for my brother and sister but shopping for gifts for him and gifts for her and her husband, and my mother, maybe even my brother’s dog too, in Brighton? On a weekend? You must be mad just to suggest it! It’s hard enough in town at the best of times so forget about the present buying frenzy that reaches its pinnacle in December.
Far easier to choose something online and get it sent in the mail, they get their gifts and I get to stay home both while shopping and instead of making the long trek into rural Britain. Bliss!
Those people who ask me where I’m going for Christmas always think it’s sad when I say I’m staying put but then they come home complaining about the terrible time they had with their families, the arguments, the amount of time and money they spent shopping only to get a hat and scarf set back in return. Their pity turns to envy when they find out what I did. Last year I spoke to my friend on the phone, went for a walk on the beach, spent the entire day alone doing exactly what I wanted. To me that’s the ideal Christmas!
