Just What Is The Real Meaning Of Christmas
What’s the True Meaning of Christmas?
Like everyone else I’ve been thinking about Christmas gifts recently. Well, let’s face it, it’s hard not to, Christmas is looming over us like the fat kid at the school Christmas party bearing down on the buffet. I’m probably supposed to get gifts for him too. What with all the adverts and the commercialisation that’s concomitant with Christmas these days it’s hard to turn a blind eye to the fact that kids still haven’t enough toys and we adults still haven’t eaten enough. Apparently this is a major problem and it’s our duty to save the economy by buying up all these products, yes, even the ones where you get a hundred vol-au-vents for two pounds and eat them. It is also our civil duty to look good in silk underwear, smell good in five different shades of aftershave AND perfume and while we’re at it get some chocolate too. When I was small we got an orange and some chocolates in our stocking and a couple of toys under the tree, these days the tree is a mere ornament to go atop the gifts. And that’s the real meaning of Christmas. But this year I’m going to stay with my sister at her house. We don’t see each other regularly so choosing gifts for her is problematic since I have no cluewhat she wants or what she already has. Tricky.
I don’t see my immediate very much since they moved out into the country about twenty years ago, because I never felt like learning how to drive we never get to see each other. If there isn’t an underground stop nearby then I can’t see any reason to go there! So there they are, out in the back end of beyond with no public transport and I’ve finally given in to family pressure and I’m going to go have Christmas with my family. I’m not looking forward to it quite frankly! I have nothing against my family but since they moved while my sister was a child and I don’t see that much so I don’t really know them very well any more. They might be my closest relatives but I hardly know them, what they like, what they hate, getting any presents should be a right hoot!
