Encourage Your Child’s Love Of Birds With Bird Feeders, Bird Houses And Wooden Playhouses
Bird watching is one of the easiest ways for children, who love birds, to explore their curiosity and expand their love of nature. There are a myriad of birds that live along side of us. They are able to provide us with wonderful opportunities to learn about them in the comfort of our backyard . Incorporating a child’s love of birds into every day play or a unique learning activity may be a little overwhelming for a parent. It’s not as hard as you might think! You just need birds and wooden playhouses. Actually, one wooden playhouse is all you need for your child’s naturalist hut and the outside of the playhouse as the bird’s playground.
There are six tips below on how to attract birds to the outdoor play house and provide your child with a fantastic fun time learning about birds. As a parent, you will feel relief and happiness knowing that you are encouraging a life long, enriching learning experience in a safe environment.
Expand your child’s fascination with birds by implementing a few of these child-friendly tips.
1. Put together a bird house . There are inexpensive and easy-to-assemble bird house kits available at local hardware or discount stores that can be painted. . Have fun researching which birds you would like to occupy your bird house and choose the appropriate type of bird house as well as location to place the bird house. When hanging up the bird house, make sure the bird house is high enough off the ground that animals won’t drive the birds away.
2. Bird feeders are essential to attracting more birds to the playhouse. . Your child will love to pick out the bird seed mix from the wide variety available. Take your child to a discount store and show them the selection of seeds and bird feed mixes that are available and have them decide which birds they would like to see at the feeder. If you want a variety of birds, you may want to have several different bird feeders with different bird seed mixes. Another reason to have multiple bird feeders is that smaller birds will have an alternative feeder to go to when the more aggressive birds, like Blue Jays, are around.
3. Bird baths supply water for your thirsty birds. You can get bird baths at hardware or discount stores. Many times you can find bird baths at thrift stores, if you wanted an inexpensive alternative.
4. Gather bird watching supplies. Your little bird enthusiast will need binoculars and a bird watching field guide for an excellent bird watching experience. The most avid bird watchers cross off the birds, in the field guide, that they see at their feeder and bird bath. Imagine the fun your child will have at using their very own bird watching field guide book to mark off the birds they have seen at their playhouse. For conversations, your child will want to tell you all about the birds that have visited the bird house, feeder or bird bath.
5. There are many bird calling audios and videos available at the library or through a book store. Within a short amount of time, your child will be able to identify 3-5 calls of visiting birds. Go with your child to the playhouse and have them show you what the bird calls are and which birds go with each bird call. This is a great bonding activity with your child .
6. A true bird naturalist will have an observation journal that they carry with them to record or draw birds of interest, the location of bird nests or newly hatched baby birds. Video cameras can be used by your child as an alternative to drawing or recording information in their journal.
Parents can foster their child’s love of birds just with a few ideas to attract birds using wooden playhouses as bases for their young birding enthusiast. The next time you hear a bird call, don’t be too surprised if you little one is able to identify the call and point out the location of the bird while throwing out some fun facts too!
