How To Juggle Having Kids and Having a Career
At some point, many stay-at-home moms make up their mind that it’s time to get back to work, but for women that have been out of work for a long period of time, this isn’t always easy. One of the biggest concerns that women have about going back to work is explaining to employers why they have been out of the workforce for such a long time. Another concern that some women have is the necessity of abandoning some of their domestic duties.
Adjusting to a new schedule and the demands of the workforce can also be somewhat intimidating. After several years of planning your day around your children’s needs, having to change your schedule to fit your employer’s needs may seem like an imposition. Of course there are always women who will enjoy the change of pace and new challenges, but there will still be some problems that must be overcome.
Here are a few tips to help mothers return to work:
- The first thing you will have to do is take some time to think. Come to terms with why exactly you are going back to work, as well as what type of job you want and how much money you will need to earn to make it worth while. Some questions to ponder include, how much flexibility you will need from your job in order to accommodate your family responsibilities? If you are really worried about these factors, a few sessions of career counselling may help to make you feel more confident.
- Before you make your final decision of whether you are going back to work, speak to your family. Decide beforehand how you and your spouse can work together to ensure that you returning to work will be beneficial for both of you, as well as your children. Your return to work will cause a change to the family unit, so make sure your children understand how and why it is going to happen.
- Self-confidence is important when it comes to going back to work. Don’t lose your self esteem - many women wrongly think that they owe their employer something and that they are doing them a favor. Just because you have been off of work for a period of time does not mean that you do not have skills to offer your employer. If you get the job, it’s because you’ve proven you’re good enough.
- Brush up on your interviewing skills. It has been a long time since you have been through an interview and your skills are likely to be a little rusty; practice interviewing with a friend or career consultant so that you will be sharp at your first interview.
- Give your Curriculum Vitae a freshening up. There will probably be something you can add to your resume; maybe you have helped run a non-profit organization, or helped at your child’s school?
- Don’t be afraid to change jobs if it doesn’t mesh well with your family duties. If you find the strain too much and can afford to, don’t be afraid to take another break.
Once you get past the initial concerns, you may find the challenge of returning to work fun and rewarding.
